For those of you wondering, no I haven’t quite recovered from last weekend’s convention. The day job has been a right struggle, but I’ve managed to drag myself through and arrive here on Saturday relatively unscathed. Good news is we have some awesome stuffs for y’all so let’s do this shit.
A Disaster Movie from Norway HAS to be good!
Wednesday we had Matt’s review on Roar Uthaug’s The Wave, while I’m not much of a disaster film fan, after reading about this I’m interested. It's based on a something that will happen sometime in the future, a mountain coming down and causing a tsunami. What’s not to love? See what I mean HERE.
Check out the second ever film by a woman to win Best Director at Cannes.
On Thursday Mags told us all about the film that won Sofia Coppola the ‘Best Director’ award at Cannes this year, The Beguiled. It’s an interesting tale about a soldier in an all-girls boarding school set during the US Civil War. Starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. Read the review HERE before watching this masterfully made movie.
On Friday I shared my adventure at the London Film and Comic Convention at Olympia from last week. Letting you know who I met and chatted with, what cool stuff I saw and whether it's worth going next time around. If I do go again, I already know what I’ll cosplay as… sorry no spoilers. But check out my event review HERE.
The Mercury Prize shortlist was released earlier this week - for those of you who don’t know, this is one of the UK’s biggest best album awards. Anyway, you know you’re getting old when you don’t know most of the entries. This year we have:
alt-j - Relaxer
Blossoms - Self Titled
Dinosaur - Together, As One
Ed Sheeran - ÷
Glass Animals - How To Be a Human Being
J Hus - Common Sense
Kate Tempest - Let Them Eat Chaos
Loyle Carner - Yesterday’s Gone
Sampha - Process
Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer
The Big Moon - Love in the 4th Dimension
The xx - I See You
If I was a betting man, I’d be inclined to back either Stormzy or Ed Sheeran, they’ve both had a stellar year that doesn’t look like it's slowing down anytime soon, though I’d love to see alt-j pick up a second or The xx pull one out of the bag, we’ll have to wait until the 14th of September to see who triumphs.
Also revealed this week was one of the guest performers on the Foo Fighters upcoming album Concrete and Gold, non other than Sir Paul McCartney, who provides the drums on one track. It's been reported that after hearing Dave Grohl play the song just once on an acoustic guitar he had it and was all done after two takes, that’s fucking impressive. Grohl has also teased what he calls “the biggest popstar in the world” is going to be singing backup on one of the heaviest tunes, can’t wait to find out who and what it sounds like, Concrete and Gold will be out on the 15th of September.
Few months back the rumours going around were Ben Affleck was either walking away from the DCEU or being let go. Well it's now come out that Batflect will continue on for a Caped Crusader trilogy. This was not what I personally wanted, I can’t stand the man and the thought of him as one of my favourite superheroes depresses me, though recent conversations lead me to believe I might just be on my own here, seems quite a few people enjoy the darker side of Affleck, let us know what your thoughts are in the comments or on social media.
Hallelujah! Hollywood is finally showing the appreciation to a man that should have had this years ago. Mark Hamill is getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Before any of you start thinking here is Dan running off on another Star Wars rant again, Mark has done literally a shit-ton of stuff, heaps of movies, looks like most TV shows ever, he’s written scripts, done stage shows and last but certainly not least, voice acting in games, series and movies, including everyone’s favourite Clown Prince of Crime… The Joker. If anyone ever deserved this it's Mark, well done fella.
American Horror Story Cult: What We Know So Far.
We all enjoy American Horror Story here at Ronon’s Reviews (though I found Freak Show’s last few episodes rushed and Hotel sucked balls), and we can’t wait for the next season, which will be called Cult. Creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy likes to keep his cards close to his chest, but has teased a few things to keep us hooked. Such as the theme will be based on the 2016 presidential election (that’s scary enough) but as seen through the eyes of a cult. Returning stars so far are: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Adina Porter, Cheyenne Jackson and Mare Winningham. Newcomers include Colton Haynes, Billie Lourd, Alison Pill, Leslie Grossman, Billy Elchner and Lena Dunham. With heaps of mentions of clowns, rumour has it Twisty from coming back, though John Carroll Lynch has yet to be confirmed.
I heard at the start of the year that Koei Tecmo was continuing their highly successful franchise of Dynasty Warriors with their ninth game. Which is revolutionizing the series by being an open world that still incorporates the big pitched battles that we love, while also adding missions of all sizes, such as scouting, guerrilla hit and runs, sabotage and more. But the problem was back when it was first mentioned it was a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Not any more, Dynasty Warriors 9 will now be on Xbox One and PC also. As of May this year the game is 40% done so we won’t be seeing this until next year.
Crash Bandicoot, a game franchise I spent many an hour on as a youth is back, the PlayStation version has absolutely killed it in the last couple of months in sales all over the world, so I’m surprised it hasn’t come over the dark side of Xbox. But rumour has it, Activision is considering it, nothing set in stone yet, but please let it happen, I’d love to play Crash again.

FYI gamers, Ghost Recon: WildLands is available as a 5 hour demo this weekend, so get into it, I know I will be.
Macklemore teams up with Lil Yachty for the perfect summer tune: Marmelade.
The video is also great because it has kids playing the young version of Mack and Yachty and they're pulling some sick moves too!
