past tense: beguiled; past participle: beguiled
- Charm or enchant (someone), often in a deceptive way.
The Beguiled earned best director at Cannes for Sofia Coppola, who was also the first female to snatch the prize in 56 years, before her, it was the turn of Russian director Yuliya Solntseva who in 1961, won the award for her drama about a bunch of Soviet commoners vs the Nazis in Chronicle of Flaming Years. Never heard about it either, but still, GIRL POWER!
Set in the middle of the American Civil War, The Beguiled tells the story of a wounded soldier who is
If all this sounds familiar, then you're not crazy. Sofia Coppola likes to point out that this is not a remake of the 1971 film with Clint Eastwood by the same name, but an adaption of the Thomas P. Cullinan novel that the film is based on, originally called A Painted Devil (exactly what is happening now with Stephen King’s IT – FYI, still not excited), the only difference is this time she’s showing the story from the women's point of view, instead of the man's.
Shot in less than a month, Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell began filming this only weeks after they finished working together on The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Yorgos Lanthimos upcoming movie out in November that I'm super excited about because I love his other weird ass work such as Dogtooth and The Lobster).
Fun fact, the outside scenes were shot at the Madewood Plantation House, near Napoleonville, Louisiana, where they also filmed quite a few movies before and also some of Beyonce’s visuals for Lemonade more recently. But what I really found interesting is that the interiors were filmed in the New Orleans home of actress Jennifer Coolidge, AKA the original MILF AKA Stifler's mom from American Pie.
Silly comedies don’t pay too bad, huh?… I still have a few more greys to grow and then I could become the next Hollywood cougar and buy myself a huge mansion. #goals
