Most debut albums are hit and miss, Promises by Sharks in your Mouth is the fabled home run all bands want.
Many great things have come from the Italian peninsula over the years, pasta, pizza…. let’s just say a lot of food, violins, pianos, the parachute, opera and ballet just to name a few things invented there. But sadly bands, or more to the point metal groups just don’t seem to make it out of the country besides of course Lacuna Coil. With any luck all that will change soon, Sharks in your Mouth is a 5 piece from a town called Ancona, have only been around for 6 years but have already amassed a loyal and sizable following from extensive touring through Europe. They’ve recently signed to MYO Agency who have released Sharks in your Mouth’s first album Promises. One of the best débuts I’ve heard in a long time.
I first heard of Sharks in your Mouth late last year (2015) when I heard about their metalcore version of Linkin Park’s ‘One Step Closer’ and I was hooked. So when it came to Tuesday and I was still struggling to find an album to cover and saw the Stalkbook post about Promises, I stopped what I was doing and downloaded it through Spotify immediately, I wasn’t disappointed. Promises opens with ‘Run’ a short intro with not a lot going on, but it builds up and leads into ‘Louder’ perfectly, which is balls to the wall fast paced metalcore at its best, loud, aggressive, takes no prisoners and really puts out to the listener what the band is all about unapologetically. ‘Everything Ends’ slows down the tempo just a bit but doesn’t lose any intensity, simple riffs but effective, one of the best tracks off Promises.
‘Your Ghosts’ really showcases Andrea Palin’s vocal range, clean, growls and all the in between, he does it with ease. ‘Insanity’ seems to be the big track off Promises, it starts off with a sound bite from The Exorcist all the while the band is slowly winding up in the background before they just unleash pure musical gold, I found myself shopping mid action while at the day job to headbang, easily the greatest tune on Promises. I have to mention ‘Forgive’, it’s a slowed down acoustic starting song with clean vocals and when it does pick up it doesn’t go over the top like some metalcore acts, but sounds almost ballard rock, proving their skills aren’t just on one area but span quite widely.
Now I can go on all day about how amazeballs the whole record and every song on it is, but I don’t have enough synonyms for awesomesauce. All joking aside though, for a debut album Promises by Sharks in your Mouth highlights a band that has everything on point and are on top of their game. While trawling the internet for info on them I heard that once Promises is out they are planning to promote it by doing a tour, I can only hope that includes a date here in the UK, Sharks in your Mouth has become one of my favourite groups in the space of a week just on the strength of 11 tracks. I see a massive future for these 5 young lads from Ancona and already can’t wait to see what they release next.

We've got a busy week coming, Mags has her usual #MagsMovieDay all ready for you and a little something special for the Friday. While I'm taking another break off album reviews and dusting off an old classic game for the Xbox 360 that is supposedly getting the remaster treatment soon, so i thought I'd get there first and redo the original. DH
Two videos this week, first is my favourite track off Promises, 'Insanity'
And here we have the cover of 'One Step Closer' that first introduced me to the group.
