I’m sure it’s not a shocker for anyone to find out the idea for this movie started off as an April Fools joke. Instead of leaving it at that, when fans got really excited about the prospect of a battle of the death between two of the favourite ghouls in Japanese history, Sadako from Ringu AKA The Ring and Kayako from Ju-On AKA The Grudge, the big brains behind the two franchises decided to give the public what they wanted. The result is a lesson for everyone: what you think you want sometimes is
I considered myself a fan of both franchise and I thought I’ve seen most of them until I found out there are respectively a mystery novel, a TV series, 6 Japanese and 4 American films for Ringu and Ju-On managed to milk a whopping 10 Japanese films, 3 Americans, a Video Game, a bunch of novels and even a manga adaptation – I’ve seen a fraction of those and heard about even fewer. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the little I saw but knowing the premises I did not expecting anything mind-blowing but at least a fun movie a la Freddy Vs. Jason.
Seems like all the effort it was put in the promotion of the film, with a baseball game, hilarious Instagram and Twitter accounts plus various YouTube videos was much more exciting than the movie itself. The story was lazily put together, way too forced and has close to none logic, the characters are pretty much all awful and very hard to relate to or even believe wtf they talk about or what they go through. Something that I enjoy even in average horror are fun deaths, and here there’s no really anything inventive about any of them but I guess that is not really either Sadako or Kayako (or even Toshio – of course the meowing little devil is in this) MO. But here’s the biggest issue: when the two antagonists finally meet, don’t expect an epic battle either, or you will be disappointed yet again!
