Since metalcore has become one of my favourite styles in recent years, I jumped at the chance to check out the godfathers of this great genre’s latest musical offering Incarnate.
Jesse Leach was quoted by Blabbermouth as saying “I wanted to be able to speak on current events – stuff that is relevant to us today, stuff that’s in the headlines – but I wanted to do it in such a way where it’s ambiguous enough people can sort of draw their own conclusion”. ‘Strength of the Mind’ was the first track out of the blocks back on the 11th of December of last year and really shows the groups intentions with this album, it’s definitely an earworm where I found myself mini head banging hours later, it has a lot cleaner lyrics than some of their others songs and works well. Next up was “Hate by Design” which came out the 29th of January 2016 which is quite a lot heavier with some killer riffs, booming drums, brilliant vocal work and I absolutely love the solo near the end, one of the best tunes off this record. The last single “Cut me Loose” first saw airplay on the 19th of February, starts off a bit slower before building up in tempo, again the guitars are amazing here, they work so well together making this piece stand out.
I must admit I’ve never really gotten into Killswitch Engage before, which I find a bit weird since I’m such a lover of the metalcore genre, and while I enjoyed this album I have to say I didn’t love it. Maybe if I’d been following them for years I might have liked it a bit more, who knows. All in all, it’s a great record with amazing vocals and some great riffs, but sadly not a strong contender for best of 2016, perhaps it’ll grow on me. We shall see.
