‘I like women like you, I don’t like normal women'.
Netflix is full of awesome stuff, and I seriously wouldn’t know what I would do with my life if they ever take it down. I recently found out they also finance films and TV series that are too weird to get funds from the more mainstream companies, or maybe just because they just don’t believe in them enough, and that if it’s possible, makes me have even have more respect for this streaming site.
Sure, a woman with an assface is hilarious, but the way her own father treats her like a freakshow is really sad. A young man that wants to be a mermaid is fuckin bonkers, right? But when it’s finally revealed why, I have to say it broke my heart a little and made me shed a tear or two the both times I watched this film.
If you go past the shock factor and the surrealism this is probably one of the most touching, saddest but also truest films ever made because you know what these bunch of weirdos want in life? Same thing we all want: happiness.
Pieles’ soundtrack is also great, the tunes are very different but they work together so well, and the way everything is in tones of pink and purple is both mesmerizing and uneasy. This is the first full length by director and former actor Eduardo Casanova, based on the short Eat My Shit that has the same subject of people with unusual features that get a different treatment from society. The Madrid born talent wrote the screenplay at the tender age of 23, shot it at 24 and gave it to the world at 25... My sister is around the same age and barely knows how to use the washing machine.
