Burial Hill starts off with the group’s lead single ‘Dead Alive’ which sets a dark, melodic and broody tone straight off, it reminds me of Placebo from back in the day with its vocals and melody, though I’m not surprised, BH have mentioned them as a major influence. Each track on the EP has a different style and ‘Shine The Light’ is the heavy one, while it is minimalistic with its distorted riff and background piano I still found myself breaking out into headbanging and the mix of Ben and Fiona’s voices works well. ‘Into The Dark’ is a haunting piano driven piece, it feels like a cross between Evanescence and Beethoven, a real highlight for me. Finally, we have ‘In Blue’ which is a pretty good Alt Rock/Metal infusion like something from the mid 90’s but with a more modern feel to it.
While Burial Hill isn’t the longest EP around, it more than makes up for its length with its content, 4 different styled tracks which shows off the duo’s awesome technical skills. Burial Hill isn’t intending on just sitting around either, when asked what the group had in store for the next 12 months Ben stated “We’re going to put out a follow up EP in the spring/summer” before playing live shows where they can. The interesting thing, they are doing all this without a label behind them, “We’re not signed to anyone, we’re doing it for ourselves. It gives us complete control, and until we get an offer that continues to allow that, or at least the pros outweigh the cons in a way we’re happy with, it will stay that way”, it is refreshing to hear that in this day and age when bands see signing to a label means you’ve made it, but must give up some creative control, yet here are 2 brilliant young musicians who’ve managed to produce a pretty sweet first EP all on their own. Ben, Fiona, you’ve got a fucking amazing release here, I loved it and can’t wait for the follow up.
