A great Pearl Jam cover band? Definitely. Best cover band ever? If not very bloody close.
Pearl Jam UK opened with “Given to Fly” and it was faultless, given that Eddie Vender’s voice is so distinct, I feared that the night’s performance would be a pure tribute with the band doing their own versions. I was wrong by a long shot, the singer Kevin has a similar voice and utilized it perfectly, close your eyes and it was almost as if Vedder himself was on that stage. The band went through Pearl Jam’s amazing back catalogue and recent hits and nailed everything from “Mind your Manners”, “Hail Hail”, the amazingly powerful “Jeremy”, “Daughter”, my personal favourite “Do the Evolution” and everything in between.
Pearl Jam UK were on stage playing, laughing, bantering with the crowd and few stage invasions and just generally having fun for almost 2 solid hours, a hell of a lot longer than most bands do these days. They did more than just go out and play a few songs, they went out and put on an awesome show. The guys themselves were the perfect gentlemen on stage and off when a few band members came out after to mingle with the crowd and were more than happy to speak to the punters and the unprepared journalist who’s girlfriend organised a quick 5 minute interview with the lead singer. Pearl Jam UK have a love for their favourite band and it shows in their playing, it helps turn a good night watching live music into the best night. The next time they come back to London I will be there in the crowd loving every minute of it.
