As I mentioned before The Last Hero was written by Tremonti and Kennedy over the winter of 2015 while out touring with their respective side projects before getting the gang together and recording pure musical gold. The opener has been all over the radio since the 26th of July and it is called ‘Show Me a Leader’, which sounds quite a lot like something from Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Coconspirators, but replace Slash’s awesome guitar work with Tremonti’s equally badass shredding, it ticks all the lead single boxes, catchy, rockin and makes you break out into air guitar and singing (I may have been guilty of that on the streets of London). ‘The Other Side’ is the closest thing to a headbanger Alter Bridge included, I love this track, it showcases the vocal range of Kennedy while the rest just sound like they’re showing off with the whole group in fine form and on point leading to it being on repeat for a while. ‘Cradle to the Grave’ is just perfect, it’s a slowed down burner, heavy on the riffs and comes across quite dark, but Tremonti’s finger work on that bridge is just exquisite.
The Last Hero gets high praise from me, I’ve been enjoying Alter Bridge for a long time and been waiting ever so patiently for a new release since seeing them live a few years ago while they were promoting the previous album. While Fortress felt like Bridge went in another direction musically, Hero feels like they’ve gotten back on their well-worn path but instead of just rehashing, they reinvented, gone darker and included a central theme of being a hero in society and people’s feeling of disillusionment with the current leaders. I loved every second of The Last Hero and recommend all Bridge fans who haven’t yet heard it to go and do it now. They are also touring heavily at the moment and I can’t stress this enough, if they are coming near to where you are, go! Alter Bridge put on one of the best live shows I’ve seen and I’m already looking forward to their next London gig, to which I’ve already got my tics, I’ll see you there.
