Corey Taylor, lead singer of Slipknot and Stonesour proved why he is one of metal’s greatest vocalists with a one off solo acoustic show at London’s Koko last night the 8th of May.
After quite literally the quickest intermission ever (2 minutes) Corey came back out and played his heart out for the next 2 and a half hours performing covers such as ‘I’ll Be Your Lover, Too’ by Van Morrison and ‘Friend of the Devil’ by the Grateful Dead mixed in with Stonesour classics and of course a staple of his solo shows the SpongeBob SquarePants theme. Taylor then brought out his special guest of the night, Stonesour band mate Christian Martucci who handled the more technical guitar work, not to say Taylor was rough on the acoustic himself. The pair then proceeded with more of their own tracks plus covers from artists such as Kiss, R.E.M., Buzzcocks, The Cure and even The Goo Goo Dolls.
I, along with quite a few people from the crowd were expecting a few more Slipknot songs, but I personally can’t complain with what we got. 2 and a half solid hours of amazing tunes, played to perfection and sung beautifully from start to finish. Shamefully I’ve still not seen Slipknot nor Stonesour live yet so this was a massive treat for me to finally see one of my favourite singers and he didn’t disappoint. These solo shows are quite rare outside of the US (though he did mention trying to take it around the world one day) so I feel privileged to have been there and implore any fans of Corey Taylor if you see this is coming near you get involved, you will thank me.
