I know most of you Metallica die hard fans have been listening to them since the early 80s, or at least by mid 90s you knew all the back catalogue, but unfortunately no one introduced me to these music gods, so it was 1996 when MTV started playing on pretty heavy rotation ‘Until It Sleeps’, that I fell in love.
The recording sessions for Load (and Reload) began the 1st of May 1995 at The Plant Studios in Sausalito, CA and just over one year later on the 4th of June 1996 the album was released and the fact that their style shifted from thrash to hard rock got a lot of hate from the fans, but not as much as the fact the 4 boys dared cut their hair! ‘Until it Sleeps’ is the first single and of course my favorite track, the bipolar swings between wrathful and gentle notes and the whole bible themed clip with the golden snake stealing the scene makes a totally bad ass rock video. Load might not be one of those albums you listen to start to finish without skipping a track, but at least half of them are memorable and even 20 years later I still love listening to the straight up bad ass ‘Ain’t My Bitch’, the quintessential Metallica tune ‘King Nothing’, the drum smashing ‘Hero Of The Day’ and of course the country ballad ‘Mama Said’.
I like to point out Load is the first Metallica album to reach the number one spot in charts literally all over the globe, that must count for something, plus I don’t care if you think this is not ‘old school Metallica’, Lars is a ‘douchebag’ and James is a ‘money grabbing bastards’ To me personally Load is a fucking good record and people really need to stop getting butthurt if your favorite musicians try something new once in awhile. If you want to listen to tunes that always sound the same you should get into Coldpay.
